Life After Terror: Cleveland Kidnapping Survivors Haven’t Seen Each Other In 4 Years

Cleveland kidnapping survivors Michelle Knight, Gina DeJesus and Amanda Berry spent nearly a decade together locked and tortured in Ariel Castro‘s house of horrors. Now, Knight revealed in her new memoir that the three survivors have not seen each other in four years.

In Life After Darkness: Finding Healing and Happiness After The Cleveland Kidnappings, Knight explained the last time the three were all together was in February 2014, when the Governor of Ohio honored them with the state’s Courage medals. However, Knight revealed the three didn’t exactly communicate at the event.

“There was no need for us to say much to one another, and we didn’t,” Knight wrote. “But we hugged each other tight, and we all know we wish each other well.”

Knight also explained the reason she decided not to join Berry and DeJesus in a joint book deal. She explained her story was different – and more abusive – than theirs.

“I was the first one he kidnapped. I had no family looking for me or worrying about me, I was held the longest, and I was treated the worst,” Knight wrote.

Then Knight added that she was tortured the most: “I was the one who bore the brunt of his beatings: he slammed a barbell against my jaw and across the side of my head, and when I became pregnant – five times – he beat me, starved me, and one time actually hurled me down the stairs until I miscarried.”

As Radar readers know, Castro was sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years. However, one month after being imprisoned he committed suicide in his cell.

Knight said now that the three are freed, it’s helpful if the women keep their distance.

“Once we were freed, I think we all felt the need to find our own way to healing. We’re all individuals, with our own personalities, our own character, and of course, our own feelings,” she wrote. “And we each need our own space.”

Still, Knight wrote the three still have a bond that’s “unbreakable.”
